Writing the Department Newsletter is both a collaborative and pedagogical exercise, one that invites students into a creative and often overlooked professional genre. Together, we plan, write, and design each issue—students contributing articles, artwork, and photographs that reflect the spirit of our classes and our campus. Many of the features do more than explain what we study; they show it in action. For example, one recent assignment asked students to compose an amplification scheme centered on the fall season, a rhetorical exercise that translated beautifully into prose and imagery for the newsletter. Regular book reviews also appear, challenging the stereotype that today’s students don’t read. Nearly every photo, too, was taken by students, capturing scenes from across Stetson’s campus and bringing the publication to vivid life.
